Last weekend saw the Iowa Hawkeyes’ College Football Playoff hopes all but dashed. There is no time to sulk, though. The tables have turned, and the Hawkeyes are now presented with a chance to play spoiler to another team’s postseason aspirations.
The No. 21 Iowa Hawkeyes (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) make the trip to Los Angeles to take on the No. 17 USC Trojans (7-2, 5-1 Big Ten) from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. While the playoff may be a long shot for the Hawkeyes, this is a chance to respond and show that they aren’t finished writing the story of 2025.

Iowa vs. USC predictions, picks, odds
This could go one of two ways for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The first, and rather sad, way this could go is that Iowa enters this one a little bit hungover from the emotional loss to Oregon, paired with a long flight out west.
The other way, and what I suspect happens, is that the Hawkeyes rally around each other, as they so often have done under head coach Kirk Ferentz, and come out swinging in this game, which should be yet another stresser.
USC has the offense to put up points. This may be Iowa’s toughest test yet, and this is a game where they have to get pressure up front to disrupt the timing of the Trojans’ quarterback, Jayden Maiava. He has an arsenal in the passing game, led by Makai Lemon (937 yards, 7 TD) and Ja’Kobi Lane (530 yards, 4 TD). The pass rush has to help here.
On offense, Iowa can play its style of game, running the ball. USC has shown vulnerabilities to the run game, and few teams are as willing to be patient pounding the as the Iowa Hawkeyes are. If Iowa can get the run game going, they can play defense by keeping the offense on the field, controlling the clock, and limiting possessions.
Iowa doesn’t roll over and die. It isn’t what they do. Iowa 27, USC 24
