After a spate of mild, cool weather, it’s going to get hot again. So hot, in fact, that Polk County will activate the Extreme Temperature Plan.
Starting Sunday, June 28, high heat and humidity are expected to push heat index values to more than 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. High temps are likely to extend into the Fourth of July weekend.
To stay safe, drink plenty of water, limit time outdoors and stay cool. Here’s what to know about the extreme temperature plan.
When does Polk County’s extreme temperature plan activate?
Polk County will activate the plan on Sunday, June 28 at 4 p.m. until further notice. The plan will remain in effect based on forecast temperatures from NWS.
On Sunday, the high is forecasted to hit near 95 degrees before dropping to 77 degrees at night. Monday is expected to see a high of 96 degrees during the day and low of 76 degrees at night.
What is Polk County’s extreme temperature plan?
When temperatures are extremely cold or extremely hot, officials designate buildings where people can shelter from dangerous weather conditions.
These Extreme Temperature Centers may be open during the facility’s normal business hours or hours may be extended depending on the situation and need.
