Ames police investigating double homicide after a woman, child stabbed

A woman and a child are dead after being stabbed, allegedly by a Fort Dodge man in Ames Friday night, police said.

Ames police were dispatched to the Windsor Pointe Apartments, on the city’s Tripp Street, at 8:42 p.m. Friday for a report of a stabbing. The woman and a child were found and treated for stab wounds, but were both later pronounced dead, according to a news release from Ames police spokesperson Maj. Dan Walter.

The names of the victims were not released by Saturday morning, pending family notification.

Police arrested and charged Davontrez R. McCuddin, of Fort Dodge, with two counts of first-degree murder. The two victims were residents of the apartment, but it is not clear if McCuddin was staying with them, Walter told the Register.

The suspect is in the custody of the Ames police with “injuries sustained during the commission of the crime,” Walter said.

McCuddin was previously wanted for attempted murder in a Fort Dodge shooting in January.

“We are aware that the individual was wanted out of Fort Dodge for their active warrant for attempted murder, and we have been in contact with the Fort Dodge Police Department to see if they might need anything from us on our end,” Walter told the Register.

The investigation into the stabbing was ongoing Saturday but police said there was no continuing threat to the public. A property manager on site declined to comment.

Ames police asked anyone with information about the stabbing to call the police at 515-239-5133 or at the anonymous tip line 515-239-5533. Those with information can also call Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400 or submit an online tip at www.crimestoppersofcentraliowa.com.
