At least one person was shot and others were injured from bullet fragments after a shooting on Kirkland Avenue near Indiana University’s campus just after midnight on April 26.
Here’s what the Bloomington Police Department and the Bloomington mayor have shared so far.
What led to the shooting
Police believe the shooting occurred after a fight broke out between two females near the Five Guys restaurant, according to a news release shared on Facebook by the Bloomington mayor. Multiple people drew handguns, according to cellphone and video footage from nearby restaurants viewed by investigators. Police believe two people then fired their weapons.
How many people were injured
One person, a 20-year-old woman from Plainfield, Indiana, had a bullet wound to her upper torso and was also struck by bullet fragments in the side of her torso. Four others were injured by embedded bullet fragments.
Others were injured while running away, including sustaining cuts and scrapes from falling. Eight people were transported to local hospitals.
Police originally thought a ninth person located at a nearby gas station was also injured in the shooting, but later clarified “it is now unknown.”
Are any suspects in custody?
No suspects were in custody as of 3 a.m., and authorities did not specify if that had changed in an updated 11 a.m. news release from the Bloomington mayor’s office. The release stated the investigation “remains ongoing.”

Bloomington mayor responds to shooting
Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson shared a live video on Facebook Sunday morning, emphasizing that there is “no place for gun violence” in Bloomington. She added that “things got out of hand when someone had a gun.”
“We are really committed to a safe Bloomington. We know that we can have big parties and keep them safe,” Thomson said. “We did that with the national championship, and we know that when we live respectfully and treat each other well, celebrations don’t need to get out hand. And I am so deeply saddened that this happened in our city last night and that several people were injured.”
She went on to thank the police and those who helped clean up Kirkland Avenue.
