9 injured after shooting near Indiana University during Little 500 weekend

At least nine people were injured in a shooting near Indiana University’s campus just after midnight on Sunday during Little 500 weekend.

Police officers on the scene heard what they believed to be multiple gunshots around 12:25 a.m. April 26 in the 400 block of E. Kirkwood Ave. before the crowd scattered, the Bloomington Police Department said in a news release. Officers found multiple injured people, though it’s not yet clear how many people suffered direct gunshot wounds or were hit by bullet fragments.

Five injured people were transported by ambulance from the scene to local hospitals, two by personal vehicles and one by a police car. A ninth person, whom police believe was injured in the shooting, was transported by ambulance from a nearby gas station.

No suspects were in custody as of 3 a.m. Anyone with information should contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.

The Little 500, the largest collegiate bike race in the United States, had just wrapped up earlier in the day. Kirkwood Avenue is a popular near-campus hotspot with bars and restaurants.
