The push toward the IHSAA sectional playoffs in baseball, softball, and boys volleyball continued with these four boys and girls being nominated for Ivy Tech Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week award.
Here are the nominees whose performances incapsulate the period between May 4-9.
Fans and readers can vote an unlimited amount of times until Friday at noon. Winners will be announced on Saturday morning.
Male athlete of the week nominees
∎ Tate Goyer, Twin Lakes, baseball: Goyer earned the pitching victory in a 9-8 win over Rossville to couple with an offensive week where he was 10-for-18 with nine runs batted in, two doubles and a home run.
∎ Brody Ray, Carroll, track and field: Ray cleared 6-6 in the high jump at the Hoosier Heartland Conference meet, breaking the league meet record and tying Eli Falkenberg’s school record mark.
∎ Jacob Schwartz, Harrison, track and field: Schwartz, a state qualifier in the long jump last season, set a personal best mark of 23-3 in the Sagamore Conference meet, breaking a league meet record that stood since 1968.
Female athlete of the week nominees
∎ Makenzie Grimes, McCutcheon, softball: Grimes went 6-for-9 over three games with six runs batted in, three doubles and two home runs. She hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in a 4-3 victory over Tri-West.
∎ Brooklynn Lattimore, West Central, softball: Lattimore went 8-for-12 out of the leadoff spot with five runs batted in and five runs scored over three victories that pulled the Trojans’ season record to 7-7.
∎ Eva Stokes, Harrison, track and field: Stokes broke a 33-year-old Sagamore Conference shot put record with her toss of 41-6. Stokes also was the Sagamore Conference discus champion.
