A neighbor of the Monroe County woman who got injured in Wednesday night’s tornado said the storm “knocked the windows right out.”
Jacque Huffman, who lives on North Buskirk Road, about four miles north-northwest of Oliver Winery, said the storm arrived at about 10:30 p.m.
“It was so loud,” she said Thursday as she surveyed the damage.
As she was holding her granddaughter in her arms, Huffman said, “She just wondered what she was doing up that late.”
According to local authorities, the storm destroyed the mobile home of Huffman’s neighbor, who took shelter in a bathtub but was suspected to have suffered a broken hip and ankle and was taken to the hospital.
“My poor neighbor,” Huffman said. “They came and got her about midnight.”
Authorities said they had to remove debris to get to the injured woman.
The National Weather Service said a “large and extremely dangerous” tornado hit the northwest portion of Monroe County near the Owen and Morgan county lines.
The storm struck about 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the storm crossed Interstate 69, downing trees that led to the closure of the highway at Mile Marker 130, about four miles south of Martinsville.
Investigators from the National Weather Service said Thursday morning that they would soon depart to three Indiana counties to survey the damage.
