MUNCIE, IN — A Muncie woman was fatally injured on the afternoon of Thursday, July 16, in a head-on crash on Indiana 32 in eastern Delaware County.
According to Jeff Stanley, chief deputy for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, the crash — involving two sport utility vehicles — was reported about 5:10 p.m. near the state highway’s intersection with Delaware County Road 800 East.
Stanley said a preliminary investigation indicated an eastbound SUV tried to pass another vehicle, crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a westbound SUV.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, 70-year-old Jama Clevenger of Muncie, was critically injured, and was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m. in the emergency department, according to Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene.
The three occupants of the westbound vehicle — an adult driver, an adult front-seat passenger and a young child secured in a child safety seat — were also taken to the Muncie hospital, Stanley said.
The adult passenger in that vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries, and was expected to be transferred to an Indianapolis hospital, according to the chief deputy.
The investigation is continuing, Stanley said, and legal blood draws have been made, standard procedure after crashes resulting in serious injury or death.
Greene said an autopsy on the victim who died would likely be conducted at the hospital on Friday.
