Andy Weaver was not out of coaching for long.
The former Plainfield boys’ basketball coach was announced as Zionsville’s new coach on Tuesday. Weaver stepped down at Plainfield after the season, the end of a 14-year tenure with the Quakers and 32 seasons overall.
From Zionsville’s release: “Pending approval by the Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees, Zionsville Community High School is pleased to announce the selection of Andy Weaver as the next Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.
“Coach Weaver brings more than three decades of coaching experience and a proven record of success at multiple Indiana high school programs. Throughout his career, he has built programs centered on player development, competitive excellence, and strong community connections while compiling 422 wins. He is a three-time IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year and five-time Mid-State Coach of the Year.
“Coach Weaver has demonstrated sustained excellence throughout his career and has built programs centered on accountability, relationships, and competitive success. We are excited for the leadership, experience, and vision he will bring to our basketball community and student athletes.”
Weaver, 59, led Plainfield to a 196-137 record, posting a winning season in each of his final 10 seasons with the Quakers. The 2020-21 team went 24-3 and ended a 22-year sectional title drought. This year’s team went 22-3 and was ranked No. 5 in the state, falling to third-ranked Pike 56-53 in the sectional semifinal.
Zionsville went 13-11 last season under J.R. Howell, who left the position in early May to accept a job coaching and training with former Fishers’ coach Garrett Winegar at Iowa United Prep. The Eagles of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference return most of their key players from last year’s team, including juniors Cadmen Moore (13.5 ppg, 4.5 rebounds), Rylon Gore (12.3 ppg, 2.6 rebounds), Nick Snively and Preston Johnson and sophomore Zack Green.
Weaver coached 15 seasons at Western, which is where Zionsville co-athletic director Josh Larsh worked for 15 years, including eight as the athletic director. Weaver has a 422-313 overall record in his 32 seasons.
