LAFAYETTE, IN — A 74-year-old Crawfordsville woman has been identified as the woman who died Friday in a car/semi collision.
Gloria Combs-Small was from Crawfordsville, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said Monday afternoon.
Preliminary autopsy results ruled Combs-Small’s death an accident, but the final manner and cause of death are pending the completion of the sheriff’s department’s crash investigation and toxicology reports, Costello said.
The northbound semi and Combs-Small’s southbound car collided about 12:30 p.m. Friday just south of the U.S. 231 bridge over the Wea Creek roughly a mile north of Romney.
The semi driver — Isaac Hood, 29, of Fowler — was driving for a company out of Fowler and was not injured in the crash, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department.
Tippecanoe County sheriff’s Capt. Rob Hainje said Monday that video from the semi showed Combs-Small was completely left of center when she collided with the semi.
Combs-Small died at the scene, and the investigation closed the highway for hours to allow for off-loading of the anhydrous ammonia from the trailer the semi was towing and to allow for crash reconstruction.
The investigation is looking into the circumstances leading up to the crash, Hainje said. This includes checking data to determine whether she was using a phone, which was found in the car.
