Central Indiana to see highest temperatures of the summer, humidity this week

Hoosiers, prepare your pools and air conditioners.

This week, central Indiana is expected to see some of the hottest — if not the hottest overall — temperatures of the year, in addition to already-existing humidity and storm threats.

Temperatures are yet to peak as of Monday, but Indianapolis-area residents can expect rain tonight. There’s an 80% chance of precipitation, Indianapolis National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Puma said, likely to take place between 4-10 p.m. Rain is expected to be brief and heavy, potentially causing minor flooding.

Highs will then soar into the 90s on Wednesday, thanks to hot southwest winds flowing toward Indiana. It will be the hottest day of the week, Puma said, with conditions expected to be sunny and gusty.

The hot and humid air mass will linger for most of the week, bringing high temperatures and potential rain on Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday afternoon, meteorologists anticipate, a cold front will come through the area, bringing highs down into the mid-80s for the weekend.

While temperatures won’t be high enough to warrant a heat advisory, Puma said, those living in central Indiana should still take precautions to stay safe in the summer heat this week. He advises Hoosiers stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, cool off in air conditioned buildings and keep a close eye on the most vulnerable age groups: children and the elderly.
