With training camp drawing closer for the Indianapolis Colts, we typically put together a 53-man roster prediction based on what we learned during offseason programs.
We will still be doing that, but the format will be different. Rather than cramming every position group into one article, we’ll devote an entire article to one unit before compiling our predictions at the end.
Up next are the safeties.
Colts safeties on the roster
Colts roster locks at safety: Cam Bynum, AJ Haulcy, Hunter Wohler
Bynum will lead the way at this position, while Haulcy may be the favorite for the starting role next to him. Wohler is a recent draft pick who appeared to be on his way to earning snaps last season prior to his injury. He could carve out a rotational role in defensive-back-heavy formations.
Why aren’t Jonathan Owens and Juanyeh Thomas roster locks?
More likely than not, these two make the team, but that’s not a 100% certainty either. Although Owens and Thomas were just signed in free agency, the Colts can get out of their deals during roster cutdowns with relative ease.
How many safeties will the Colts roster?
Many teams around the NFL will keep five. However, last year we did see the Colts roster just four at this position. Depending on how training camp unfolds for Owens and Thomas, along with what happens at other position groups, it isn’t out of the question that this could happen again.

Considering how the rest of my roster predictions unfolded, I do have the flexibility of keeping a fifth safety. I also tend to think at this time that the Colts will as well, to add some more experience to this unit, along with additional special teams help between Owens and Thomas.
