The Indianapolis Colts are on a four-game losing streak, and their playoff hopes are waning. However, there has been a bright spot for this team, and a bit of a surprising one at that — the run defense.
This past Sunday, the Colts held the Seahawks to just 2.3 yards per carry on 22 rush attempts. But it’s not only in that game where the Colts have found success.
Indianapolis will enter Week 16 allowing just 3.7 yards per rush on the season — good for the lowest mark in the NFL.
Adding to the impressive nature of this production is the fact that the Colts have accomplished this without DeForest Buckner since Week 9.
And doing so has been a collective effort.
Grover Stewart continues to be a force inside against the run, and the addition of Neville Gallimore this offseason has helped. Adetomiwa Adebawore has made strides in his game this season as well, while the defensive ends continue to set strong edges.
This play against the run also extends to the second and even third-level defenders, with the Colts’ linebackers and safeties contributing as well.
Not to be overlooked either is Lou Anarumo and his defensive scheme that can throw a lot of looks at opponents.
Oftentimes for a defense, overall success begins with stopping the run. Doing so puts the offense behind the sticks and in predictable passing situations, where the defense now has the upper hand.
