Aliyah Boston to miss first game of WNBA career with injury as Fever play Storm

INDIANAPOLIS — Aliyah Boston has been ruled out for Sunday’s Indiana Fever game vs. the Seattle Storm, the team announced Sunday.

Boston suffered a lower right leg injury during Friday’s overtime loss to the Washington Mystics. It is unclear when the 6-foot-5 center suffered the injury, but she checked out with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Fever coach Stephanie White labeled Boston “day-to-day” during her pregame press conference and said they will re-evaluate her Monday.

Myisha Hines-Allen will replace Boston in the starting lineup.

Boston has been working her way back from a lower leg injury she suffered during Unrivaled in late February. Her recovery forced her to miss the Fever’s first two preseason games and she has been on a minutes restriction to start the regular season.

Asked if Boston reaggravated that injury, White replied: “Our medical team can give you specifics about what exactly it is.”

“We said this since the first day of training camp: We’re going to be managing (Boston), managing her ramp-up, managing her on the day-to-day,” White said. “Again, it’s still early, so there’s no reason to really push anything. We want to make sure we are utilizing an abundance of caution.”

This is the first game Boston has missed in her college or professional career, a streak spanning 275 games. Boston is averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 23.2 minutes per game this season.

“Obviously, Aliyah provides a lot for this team, so everybody’s gotta step up,” Caitlin Clark said pregame Sunday. “But at the same time, we have great pieces, we have people who can step up into that position and everybody’s going to have to give a little more, give a little bit more. There are some people who did that a lot last season, so they have a lot of experience in that.”

“We’ll all continue step up and fill her shoes the best we can,” she continued. “Obviously, those are big shoes to fill, especially defensively. She’s a great communicator, she rebounds the ball really well — those are two areas we really have to do well.”
