AAR Aircraft Services, the largest heavy airline maintenance provider in the country, will close its Indianapolis facility at the Indianapolis International Airport, laying off more than 300 workers in the process.
AAR plans to close its facility at 2825 West Perimeter Road by February 2027, and will lay off about 329 employees in phases throughout 2026 and 2027, according to a WARN notice filed by the company to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Dec. 22.
The Illinois company headquartered near O’Hare International Airport provides maintenance, supply chain and engineering services to commercial airline and government clients. AAR operates a 367,000-square-foot facility with 10 hangar bays to the west of the commercial terminals at the Indianapolis airport that can fit up to 15 aircraft at a time.
One of four repair plants in the United States, the Indianapolis location is the company’s largest airframe facility in the country. AAR has leased space at the airport since 2004 and is currently the largest tenant in the Indianapolis Maintenance Center operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority. The two entities signed a two-year lease extension in February 2025.
AAR plans to begin layoffs on Feb. 15, 2026, and will continue separations through Feb. 28, 2027. All employees will be given 60 days notice prior to their separation date.
Under the Workers Adjustment and Retraining Act, employers must provide at least 60 days notice when closing a facility or undertaking mass layoffs. Companies are not required to give a reason for layoffs in the disclosure.
AAR Aircraft Services did not immediately respond to an IndyStar request for more information on Dec. 29.
In November, AAR acquired HAECO Americas, the second largest heavy maintenance provider in North America, for $78 million, expanding the company’s dominance in the industry. With the acquisition, AAR took over two maintenance facilities, one in North Carolina and one in Florida.
The Indianapolis plant closure is expected to be permanent, AAR said.
