The Indianapolis Colts were without a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft, but things did seem to play out quite well for them, all things considered.
Here are three Colts-specific takeaways from Round 1 of the draft.
No linebackers were taken
You name it, and the Colts need it at the linebacker position. Depth and competition throughout that position group are required. So the fact that no linebackers were taken within the first 32 picks is great news for the Colts. This increases the chances of them landing a more immediate impact presence when they are on the clock.
Plenty of edge rushers are still available
Only five edge rushers were selected in the first round, which is on the low side compared to what some draft analysts expected, giving the Colts more potential options when picking on Day 2. Despite the additions made here in free agency, the Colts should still be in search of bolstering this position group in an effort to have a more consistent pass rush in 2026.
Could this increase the chances of the Colts trading down?
We already know that accumulating more draft capital is on Chris Ballard’s radar. The chances of that happening may have increased with how Round 1 unfolded. With plenty of linebacker and defensive end depth available, as well as value at wide receiver, if the Colts’ board is in good shape when picking, then moving down may be the prudent move.
