Tom Brady believes Ben Johnson gives Caleb Williams best chance to succeed

Tom Brady, one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks and seven-time Super Bowl champion, has seen it all throughout his time in the league, both as a player and now a broadcaster for FOX Sports. It would be hard to argue that anyone in the NFL knows the quarterback position better than Brady, which also means he understands what type of coaching would be needed for specific quarterbacks around the league.

In an effort to turn their franchise around, the Chicago Bears hired offensive guru Ben Johnson to be their new head coach this season, pairing him with last year’s No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Caleb Williams. Johnson will be responsible for getting the most out of Williams while also helping build the young quarterback into a franchise-leading quarterback and getting the most out of his potential.

Ahead of Johnson’s coaching debut in the Bears regular season opener on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, Brady was asked about the pairing between the Bears coach and Williams. Looking at how Johnson could work with Williams in terms of development, Brady believes that the new Bears coach gives the young quarterback the best chance to succeed.

“There’s all these forms of development that need to take place,” Brady told Cris Collinsworth, via Pro Football Focus. “When you get a great teacher like Ben Johnson, that’s going to give Caleb (Williams) the best opportunity to succeed. Ben has really come on in the NFL over the last three seasons, really, and with Jared (Goff) and when they got Jared, they thought they were getting a throwaway quarterback. Jared has turned into an MVP candidate, and Ben did an incredible job in helping Jared succeed by catering the offense to the skill set of the quarterback, which in the end, that’s what every coordinator should do.

“Now you go on to another No. 1 overall pick in Caleb, that has certainly a different physical style of play, and Ben is going to have to adapt that system to the strengths of Caleb. I think when I saw Caleb play last year, when he was at his best, the ball came out of his hand quickly, he was very decisive, he was getting to his reads quickly. When Caleb holds the ball for a long time, he’s not as good. He’s got to drop back, evaluate the coverage, find the weak spot of the coverage, and make an accurate throw.”

Johnson’s work with Goff has certainly set a precedent for what to expect out of Chicago’s new head coach as he begins his working relationship with Williams.
