A homicide suspect from a neighboring county died on Monday, July 27, after a police chase ended in a crash at Sand Point Park, according to the Titusville Police Department.
At 7:45 p.m., Titusville police asked that people avoid the park, the site of a “critical incident. Officers located the vehicle, which then crashed at the park, TPD said. The suspect’s identity was not released as of Monday evening.
The driver died at the scene. The cause of death was not immediately known and remains under investigation, according to TPD. No law enforcement officers were injured, police said.
Titusville Mayor Andrew Connors said on Facebook late Monday night that the city’s Flock Safety camera system alerted officers that the suspect’s vehicle had entered the city.
Flock Safety cameras were installed by the city last year and are used by several Brevard County law enforcement agencies to identify license plates numbers of potential criminal suspects. “In criminal cases, victims often provide vehicle descriptions or partial information, and by using this system, officers and detectives can query the scans by vehicle type, color, or license plate to identify possible suspects with limited information. All scans are stored for thirty (30) days and purged if not saved in direct relation to a case,” according to information provided by Titusville Police Department on their camera system policy.
“This incident demonstrates the value of investing in modern public safety technology and maintaining strong partnerships with neighboring law enforcement agencies,” Connors said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing.
