You voted on the Rockford Register Star high school Athlete of the Week poll, sponsored by Gustafson’s Furniture & Mattress, and now it’s time to see who you chose.
The winner for the athlete of the week for Sept. 29-Oct. 4 is Dakota golfer Koehn Lawler. Lawler shot a 72 to win the Pearl City Regional last week, which boosted him and his team into the Class 1A sectionals. Lawler then went out and earned nearly 40 percent of the vote in our athlete of the week poll.
Almost every week for the rest of the school year, we will compile a list of athletes from the Rockford area who had standout weeks, and let you, the reader, vote on who you think deserves the AOTW award. Every week, you will be able to find the nominees as well as the poll at rrstar.com.
And every week, we ask that you vote only once per day, to keep the polls fair. And do not send an email to vote. The only votes that count are the ones on the poll.
Here are the rest of this week’s nominees:
Cole Beto, Boylan golf
Beto shot a 71 to win the title at last week’s Belvidere Regional, and he helped propel Boylan to the team title as well. Sectionals were scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6.
Andrew Bucci, Belvidere North football
Bucci was the leader for undefeated Belvidere North last week, rushing for an even 100 yards on just eight carries while scoring twice.
Trixie Carroll, Eastland volleyball
Carroll tallied 18 kills in Eastland’s straight-set victory over Amboy last week, and she added 11 digs and an ace. The win bumped Eastland to 16-3 this season.
Braxton Fausett, Harlem football
Fausett completed 7 of his 12 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns as Harlem earned its fifth win of the season last week.
Alex Hernandez, Boylan football
Hernandez rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns to lead Boylan to a 42-28 win over Auburn last week.
Reese Mekeel, Polo volleyball
This sophomore led Polo to three victories in volleyball last week, averaging just over six kills per set. She had 10 kills in Polo’s straight-set win over Oregon last Thursday.
Ella Pieschel, Lutheran golf
Pieschel shot a 76 and won the top spot at last week’s Oregon Regional. Her and Lutheran were scheduled to take part in this week’s sectional.
Drew Shockley, Hononegah football
Shockley sparked Hono’s 34-0 win over East on Friday night by rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 147 yards and two more TDs.
Molly Webb, Winnebago cross country
Webb, a sophomore, won last Saturday’s Freeport Invitational for the girls, clocking in at 18:04.81 for the 3-mile course.
Aidan Wild, Lena-Winslow football
Wild rushed for 114 yards on just eight carries as Lena-Winslow won its fourth in a row, 46-7 over Morrison last Friday night.
Draven Zier, Eastland/Pearl City football
Zier tallied 182 yards on the ground along with four rushing touchdowns as E/PC held off Forreston 51-24 in Week 6 action on the football field.
