He merges his folk background and more than 15 years of jazz study with the Brazilian musical language he spent the last three years studying, all on an instrument seldom associated with either: the violin. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets, food and drinks. The 6 p.m. potluck is optional, but provides the opportunity to connect with others in the audience and maybe share a meal with the artist. Shadowlands featuring S. Carey & John Raymond
What: John Raymond and S. Carey have been playing music together for close to 20 years since they studied music at UW-Eau Claire. They both received training in jazz and classical music, but their careers went in different directions. Carey would become the right-hand man to Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver); collaborate as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Low and Bruce Hornsby; and release four albums of his own to critical acclaim. Raymond became a Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer; release eight albums and teach at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. In 2019, the two reunited and began experimenting. Their music ranges from intimate and meditative to soaring and anthemic, with electric moments of musical interplay throughout. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets, food and drinks. The 6 p.m. potluck is optional but provides the opportunity to connect with others in the audience and maybe share a meal with the artist. Plates, bowls, silverware, napkins and serving spoons are provided. The rain location is the Bishop Hill Commons. This is an all-ages, family-friendly show.
