Remains found in Kewanee identified as missing 47-year-old man

The Henry County Coroner’s Office has identified a 47-year-old man missing since 2022 as the person whose skeletal remains were found on May 27 in a Kewanee park.

Daniel J. Cernovich had been reported missing on Nov. 18, 2022, with his remains being found May 27 by a company that had been cleaning bathrooms at Northeast Park. According to the Kewanee Police Department, an autopsy was conducted on Friday, but no identification had been made at the time.

Henry County Coroner Melissa Watkins said that the remains could be identified as belonging to Cernovich, with preliminary findings showing that there was no evidence of tool markings or intentional dismemberment on his body, along with no sign of gross blunt force or penetrating trauma.

Kewanee police said that a forensic anthropology examination remains ongoing, with Cernovich’s family being notified of his death.

The investigation into Cernovich’s death remains ongoing, with anyone having further information asked to contact the police department at (309) 853-1911 and ask for the investigations division.
