Peoria woman sentenced to 45 years in prison for fatal 2023 stabbing

A Peoria woman was sentenced to 45 years in prison Friday for the fatal August 2023 stabbing of a 26-year-old woman at a Phillips 66 gas station in south Peoria.

Cathy A. Logan, 55, was convicted in November 2025 of stabbing Tanazisha Green in the parking lot of a Phillips 66 gas station in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue in August 2023. Peoria County Circuit Judge Stephen Kouri handed down the sentence Friday, within the lines of pleas from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office asking him to impose a long prison sentence.

At Friday’s hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Katie Moushon said that because Logan had initiated the conflict between her and Green, a long sentence was necessary.

The state’s attorney’s office said that on Aug. 10, 2023, Peoria police officers responded to the gas station after they received a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, Green was found on the ground with a pair of woman trying to apply pressure to a single stab wound on her chest.

The officers took over the life-saving measures before she was taken to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, where she eventually died.

During a three-day trial held in November, Logan claimed she had acted in self-defense, saying that Green had dropped a knife while they were confronting each other. Logan then picked up the knife and stabbed her.

However, surveillance footage and witness testimony would contradict Logan’s claims. Evidence showed that Logan arrived at the gas station and put down her purse before approaching Green with the murder weapon and stabbing her in the chest. Logan walked away for a short while before returning to the scene to take the weapon and flee. The weapon was never recovered.

A witness said at trial that she saw Logan arrive at the gas station, pick up a pair of scissors, approach Green and stab her. That witness would join another person in rendering aid to Green before police arrived.

Surveillance video showed both woman approaching the gas station in opposite directions, with Green walking away from Logan. Logan would then approach her and stab Green in the chest. Nothing seen in the video shows Green dropping a knife or Logan picking up a weapon.

Logan’s sentence must be served at 100%.
