Peoria Heights mayor makes first court appearance on DUI charges

Peoria Heights Mayor Matt Wigginton appeared in court for the first time Friday morning following his arrest on misdemeanor DUI charges earlier this month.

Wigginton’s hearing was a formality, and he was assigned a June 19 date for his next appearance in Peoria County Court. Wigginton declined to comment following the hearing and said he is going to let the process play out.

His attorney, Kevin Sullivan, told the Journal Star that they have filed a petition to have his license suspension rescinded.

Wigginton, who became Peoria Heights’ mayor last year, was arrested on DUI charges in Downtown Peoria after he was found sleeping in his car in a downtown parking garage. Sullivan told the Journal Star for a previous story that Wigginton did not drive his car that night, saying he was safe and appropriately parked in a private parking garage.
