A man who blew through a red light in Peoria was found guilty in the case of a deadly hit-and-run on Thursday in Peoria.

John Timothy Jr., 41, was found guilty in Peoria County Court on Thursday of hitting and killing 28-year-old Akeem Alexander with his car on the 1900 block of Howett Street in August 2023.

Timothy Jr.’s sentencing is scheduled for September.

Alexander was hit and killed in the early morning hours of August 28, 2023. He was found dead lying in the street near a bicycle.

Timothy Jr. turned himself in to police two days after the crash but originally told police that his vehicle had been stolen. Surveillance footage, according to Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos, told a different story, however.

Video showed Timothy Jr. running a red light, hitting Alexander and then driving off without stopping, according to Hoos’ office.

Police found parts of Timothy Jr.’s Land Rover near the scene of the crash and later found the vehicle with heavy damage on Antoinette Street.

Alexander was 28 years old when he was killed.
