Four killed, 14 injured in Chicago River North shooting. What to know about victims, arrests

Fourteen people were injured and four were killed in a drive-by shooting outside a lounge in Chicago’s River North neighborhood on July 2, USA TODAY reported.

Here’s what we know.

What happened?

The Chicago Police Department told USA TODAY the shooting occurred at 11 p.m. when a dark-colored vehicle drove by and fired into a crowd of people standing outside. The car immediately fled the scene after shooting.

The New York Times reported that the shooting took place on Chicago Avenue, about a mile from Lake Michigan near the northern edge of downtown. The Chicago Sun-Times said the incident occurred at the Artis Restaurant and Lounge, located at 311 W. Chicago Ave.

Social media posts suggested that local rapper Mello Buckzz was hosting a private event at the lounge that evening to celebrate the release of her new album.

Who were the victims in River North shooting?

The deceased victims were two men, ages 24 and 25, and two women, ages 26 and 27, according to The New York Times.

The injured were taken to hospitals in the area, with three in critical condition, USA TODAY reported. One injured victim was shot in the back, a second was shot in the leg and a third in the mouth.

No victims’ names have been released as of Thursday morning.

Have arrests been made in River North shooting?

No arrests have been announced. Police are still investigating the shooting.

Chicago crime rates

So far this year, murder rates in Chicago have decreased for at least the fourth year in a row, according to statistics published by the CPD.

Fatal shooting rates in the city decreased by nearly 35% from the first half of 2024 to the first half of 2025, from 240 to 157, as shown by the city’s online Violence Reduction Dashboard. The fatal and non-fatal shooting rate in the River North area is 1.3 per 10,000 residents.
