The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for northern and northeast Illinois today, warning of reduced visibility into the late morning. The service also warned of possible severe storms and elevated fire risk due to the sudden rise in temperatures and low humidity levels.
Here’s the forecast.
Fog advisory in northern Illinois
Fog over Lake Michigan drifted inland across northern and northeast Illinois this morning, with some patches becoming locally dense, according to the NWS.
A dense fog advisory is in place until 10 a.m. in McHenry County, Lake County and northern parts of Cook County, with visibility reduced to one-quarter mile or less. In the suburbs west of the city, such as Dekalb and Rockford, the NWS forecasts patchy dense fog.
The NWS warns that dense fog could make driving conditions hazardous and recommends driving slowly, using your headlights and leaving plenty of distance between your car and the car in front of you.
Severe weather threats in Chicago and central Illinois
The development of storms in northern and central Illinois on Thursday and Friday remains uncertain, but severe weather is possible if storms form, according to the NWS. Between late afternoon and evening, there is the potential of isolated or scattered thunderstorms occurring, with destructive hail, damaging winds and tornadoes possible.
Between 4 p.m. on Thursday and the end of Friday, a brief period of elevated fire danger may also occur in parts of northern and central Illinois due to hot and dry conditions, as well as southwest gusts of 35-40 mph. The NWS recommends people consider altering outdoor burning plans.
