Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson opens up on pending contract situation

This season is set to be a make-or-break year for Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, and he is not shying away from what he has to accomplish this season or the questions surrounding him.

Stevenson is immediately back in the spotlight for the Bears defense after Nahshon Wright departed for the New York Jets in free agency this offseason and veteran Kyler Gordon entered training camp continuing to battle a calf injury.

Heading into the second week of training camp, Stevenson discussed his pending contract situation and said that his only focus is to be the second-best cornerback opposite Jaylon Johnson.

“I’m not a real down the road thinker,” Stevenson said. “Honestly, I want to come in here and my goal is to be the best corner on this team, except Jaylon Johnson. I just want to help this team win, me doing that and being a selfless guy for this team, everything will work itself out. “

The Bears defense is certainly going to need Stevenson to step up, especially in the wake of the injury to safety Coby Bryant, putting the secondary as a major focus in the early stages of this season. Not only will the team need a big year from Stevenson, but he’ll need it for himself to land the next good contract for himself, whether it’s in Chicago or elsewhere.
