The Florida Board of Governors Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics will meet in Orlando on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to discuss the future of college sports at the state’s public institutions like Florida State and the University of Florida, among others.
The task force was created to help build a sustainable future for state institutions in an era of collegiate athletics that allows schools to pay players up to $20.5 million in revenue directly.
The financial impacts of the evolving collegiate landscape on programs across the country have led to congressional action in the form of the Protect College Sports Act, which is currently being reviewed before heading to the Senate floor for a vote on Capitol Hill.
For schools like FSU, the program previously had $22.5 million in auxiliary funding approved by the Board of Governors to cover the cost of revenue sharing. It’s one of the strategies that programs have taken to help cover the increased cost of college athletics.
The status of the Protect College Sports Act is one of the agenda items that the Florida BOG task force will discuss. According to the agenda, the task force will urge Congress to pass an antitrust exemption for the NCAA to establish a salary cap, transfer, and eligibility regulations, alongside allowing conferences to pool broadcasting rights.
Other items on the agenda include.
The Tallahassee Democrat will have a live blog covering all the action. Follow it below.
