The first major poll of the 2026 season is out! USA TODAY Sports released the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll on Aug. 4. The Texas Longhorns are ranked fourth to start the year. Ohio State, the Longhorns’ Week 2 opponent, begins the season at No. 1. Oregon and Georgia are also ahead of the Horns. Notre Dame rounds out the top five.
Last year, Texas was the preseason No. 1 in the coaches poll. It was the first time Texas had been the preseason No. 1 in the coaches poll. But after a Week 1 loss at Ohio State, UT was never ranked No. 1 again in 2025. In fact, the Longhorns missed the college football playoff.
Rivals Texas A&M and Oklahoma are No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. The SEC has nine teams in the initial coaches poll. The Big Ten lands eight teams in the poll, including the top two. The Big 12 has four ranked teams, and the ACC lands three teams in the preseason poll.
