Two men suspected in an aggravated robbery were arrested by auto theft investigators when a pursuit ended after a traffic collision on Dyer Street in Northeast El Paso, police said.
Angel Aaron Flores, 22, of Horizon City, and Rafael De Jesus Bustillos, 18, of San Elizario, were arrested on multiple charges after a pursuit involving the Texas Department of Public Safety, El Paso Police Department spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo stated in a news release on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The pursuit occurred Monday afternoon, Aug. 3, while officers with the EPPD Auto Theft Task Force were investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred the day prior, police stated.
Auto theft investigators located the vehicle and requested the assistance of Texas state troopers to conduct a traffic stop, police said.
The vehicle refused to stop, eventually collided and became inoperable and stopped in the 8600 block of Dyer Street by Lawrence Street near Sunrise Village shopping center, police said.
Further details on the robbery were not disclosed since the investigation continues.
Flores, the alleged driver, was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest with a vehicle and failure to stop and render aid after a collision involving injury, police said.
Bustillos was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, assault on a peace officer and evading arrest.
Bustillos’ bonds were set at $50,000 on the aggravated robbery, $10,000 on the assault on a peace officer and $1,000 for the evading arrest cases, a jail log stated. He remains at the El Paso County jail in Downtown as of Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Flores is being held at the Downtown jail without bond pending a hearing because of Senate Bill 9 (SB 9), a new state law that prohibits the automatic setting of bond on certain violent crime charges, according to jail records.
