Winn-Dixie makes strong comeback, converts all Harveys in Florida, Georgia

After celebrating its 100th anniversary last year, The Winn-Dixie Company hopes to come back strong with new stores, a new logo, more products, and a renewed focus on Florida.

The Miami-born, Jacksonville-based grocery chain completed converting eight Harveys Supermarket locations into Winn-Dixie stores, the chain announced on June 22, bringing all its stores under one name. The last Harveys in Florida reopened as a Winn-Dixie four days earlier, in Jacksonville.

The new locations feature a refreshed look and full product lineup, including signature Own Brand products, fresh produce, quality meats, and prepared foods, the company said. Winn-Dixie also expanded its delivery options through Amazon in April to reach households in most Florida metro areas.

“Completing these conversions is a defining milestone for The Winn-Dixie Company and an important step forward for the communities we proudly serve,” said Anthony Hucker, Chairman and CEO, in the release. “For more than a century, Winn-Dixie has been part of family meals, neighborhood traditions and everyday moments across Florida and southern Georgia.

“Today, we are building on that legacy with a reinvigorated brand, a renewed commitment to our customers and associates, and a clear focus on the future. As we look ahead, we remain committed to creating even more opportunities, connections and memories because of Winn-Dixie.”

The Winn-Dixie Company also acquired three Hitchcock’s Markets to convert to Winn-Dixie locations. One in Williston opened in December, and converted stores in Keystone Heights and Alachua will open in the next few months, the company said. A new store is planned for Zephyrhills later this year.

Winn-Dixie signs going up mark a change from what Florida residents have gotten used to in the last year or so: Winn-Dixie signs replaced with signs for Aldi.

Why did so many Winn-Dixie stores become Aldi stores?

In 2024, the discount grocery chain Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers, the parent company for Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, with plans to convert them to its much smaller format. Aldi hoped to open 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028.

Within a year, a consortium of private investors, led by Hucker (the former SG CEO) and C&S Wholesale Grocers, reacquired about 170 grocery stores, although Aldi kept the locations they had already converted or were in the process of converting. They also got back the existing Winn-Dixie liquor store business that Aldi had left alone.

The consortium formed a new company, The Winn-Dixie Company, and closed locations in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, to focus on Florida and Georgia.

Meanwhile, Aldi opened 60 new stores in Florida in 2025, most of them converted Winn-Dixies, and has already opened about 20 this year, with more to come. The new stores are part of the chain’s rapid expansion plan to open more than 180 new stores nationwide in 2026.
