A century-old estate with sunset views of Sarasota Bay and ties to Ca’ d’Zan, the former home of John and Mable Ringling, is available for $1.75 million as a historic property that is structurally sound but in need of cosmetic repairs and updates.
The estate, known as La Hacienda Del Puesta Sol, or “The Estate of the Setting Sun,” is located at 2830 Bay Shore Circle and listed by Donna Palm, a broker at RE/MAX Alliance Group.
The estate consists of a 3,899-square-foot main house with three bedrooms and three bathrooms and a 1,424-square-foot carriage house with three bedrooms and two baths.
The carriage house includes a studio apartment that was used as an art studio by the current owner, artist Norton Rock, a painter and illustrator who has several aviation-themed pieces commissioned by the United States Air Force that are now listed in the National Archives.
Rock is the most recent owner of the historic home that was built by Albert Roehr, founder of Sarasota Ornamental Iron Works.
“There’re actually three separate units that can be rented out for seven-day increments,” Palm told the Herald-Tribune.
Roehr’s ornamental iron can be found in the gates of the John Ringling Mansion and other landmarks in Sarasota and on St. Armands Key, as well as in detail pieces on the 0.39-acre estate.
What is the history of the home?
In 1987, the estate was listed on the city of Sarasota’s historic register and a marker at the home lists the construction date as 1925 — the same year the Bay Haven subdivision was created.
Albert Roehr bought the parcel where the home is located in May 1925 and by late 1925, Roehr’s sons Martin and Clifford were living on the site, according to the Sarasota History Alive! website.
The home was likely completed in late 1926.
On Oct. 21, 1929 — days before the Oct. 24 stock market crash that started the Great Depression — it was purchased by Emma and George Lindsay, the parents of David B. Lindsay, one of the founders of the Sarasota Herald.
George Lindsay would later serve as editor of the Sarasota Herald and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune until his death in 1946.
Several other notable people, including historian and author Karl H. Grismer, called La Hacienda Del Puesta Sol home until Norman and Jackie Rock purchased the property in 1986.
Palm noted that Rock treated the estate as a living work of art and it was featured on home tours hosted by the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation and the Designer Showcase of Homes.
People currently viewing the home can also enjoy several of Rock’s pieces still hanging on the walls.
“It’s really cool,” Palm said. “It’s almost like walking through a museum.”
What is unique about the home?
The main home contains original hardwood floors, a hardwood staircase and masonry wood-burning fireplaces that were retrofitted to work with gas
French doors connect the living room with a wraparound screened porch and a view of Sarasota Bay.
Original chandeliers and Italian-style tile reflect Roehr’s original vision for the home.
In all, the house contains three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a formal living room, a formal dining room, parlor, kitchen and laundry room.
The main suite offers a view out of several bay windows and an ensuite bath.
A second-floor bedroom opens to a rooftop seating area above the porch, which offers unencumbered views of sunsets over Sarasota Bay.
The home also includes a widow’s walk — an area of a home once meant for watching arriving boats — that allows another view of Sarasota Bay.
The carriage house offers two separate living spaces with their own entrances, a downstairs studio apartment and an upstairs two-bedroom apartment.
Short-term one-week rentals are allowed for those apartments.

La Hacienda Del Puesta Sol is located at 2830 Bay Shore Circle, at the intersection of Bay Shore Circle and Virginia Drive.
The current sale price of $1.75 million includes a $50,000 mid-June reduction in asking price and is $250,000 lower than a recent $2 million appraisal.
Palm noted that the reduction reflects the fact that the estate needs some tender loving care.
