Sarasota County roads darkened by copper wire thefts

Sarasota County is working with local law enforcement after two recent copper wire thefts left portions of local roadways dark and created potential safety hazards for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

In one incident on 17th Street, thieves stole 9,000 feet of underground electrical wire, and repairs cost the county about $45,500, according to a news release from Sarasota County.

In a separate incident on Bahia Vista Street, about 7,000 feet of wire was stolen, resulting in roughly $9,000 in repair costs.

County officials said crews are replacing stolen copper with non-copper alternatives during repairs in an effort to reduce the financial incentive for future thefts, though individuals continue cutting into the infrastructure.

Sarasota County said it is coordinating with law enforcement, monitoring affected corridors and prioritizing repairs to restore lighting.

Residents who see suspicious activity near pull boxes or electrical infrastructure — especially at night or involving unmarked vehicles — are asked to call 911. Damage to electrical infrastructure or pull boxes can be reported to the non-emergency line at 941-316-1201.
