Florida football will look to snap a two-game losing streak and keep its slim bowl hopes alive when it plays at No. 7 Ole Miss.
The Florida Gators (3-6, 2-4 SEC) are coming off a 38-7 blowout loss at Kentucky, their worst loss against the Wildcats since 1950, when Bear Bryant was coach. UF needs to win its final three games over Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State to reach a bowl for the second straight loss.
The Kentucky loss dropped Florida to 0-2 under interim coach Billy Gonzales, who replaced the fired Billy Napier on Oct. 19.
Florida is 0-4 on the road this season, while Ole Miss (9-1, 5-1 SEC) is 7-0 at home. The Rebels have been led this season by dual threat quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has passed for 2,356 yards and 13 TDs while rushing for 434 yards and 6 TDs.
“We’re going into a place where they have not lost this year, and they do a really good job of playing fast and tempo-wise,” Gonzales said. “So we’ve got to do a great job on offense and defense, to make sure that we can contain the quarterback, contain the weapons, and then obviously we’ve got to make some points, make some plays on the offensive side and put some points up on the board for us.”
Adding to the intrigue of the Florida-Ole Miss matchup is the Rebels are coached by Lane Kiffin, considered the top target to become UF’s next head coach. Florida leads the series with Ole Miss 13-12 (one tie) and has won the last three games between the two schools, including a 24-17 upset over the Kiffin-led Rebels at The Swamp last season.
