FAMU baseball plummets in SWAC standings after swept by Grambling State

The Bayou State wasn’t polite to the Florida A&M baseball team.

The Rattlers, on their road trip to Grambling State, were swept in a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series at Wilbert Ellis Field at Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones Park.

In a doubleheader on Saturday, May 2, FAMU (20-23, 15-9 in SWAC) lost to Grambling (19-26, 16-8) narrowly in both games, 12-11 and 6-4. Sunday, May 3, saw FAMU squander a 9-3 third-inning advantage to fall 19-9 in a seven-inning run-rule loss.

Just two weeks ago, the Rattlers were tied for first in the SWAC with Bethune-Cookman, as the Florida rivals entered their series.

FAMU lost the series 2-1 to Bethune-Cookman to break the tie. Then the Rattlers’ sweeping loss to the Grambling State Tigers moved FAMU to sixth in the SWAC out of 12 teams.

There’s still some season left for the Rattlers to rise again through the ranks, though.

FAMU next travels to the league’s second-worst team, Alabama A&M (10-38, 3-19 in SWAC), for a three-game series from Friday, May 8, until Sunday, May 10.

The Rattlers regular season concludes on May 16, when the SWAC’s fifth-ranked team, Texas Southern, visits Tallahassee.

The SWAC Tournament runs from May 20 until May 24.
