West Palm residents show concern at meeting on downtown growth

Dozens of residents concerned about the pace of development in downtown West Palm Beach crowded into City Hall for a meeting about the downtown’s future.

About 100 residents, most of them wearing blue T-shirts that say “Save West Palm Beach,” were present for the July 8 meeting of the city’s Downtown Action Committee, an advisory board that reviews proposed development projects downtown before city commissioners vote on them.

The committee had been scheduled to vote on a new “Downtown Master Plan,” a planned overhaul of downtown development rules. If approved, the plan would allow developers to construct towers of up to 25 stories along Flagler Drive and reduce the amount of parking developers must build.

But the plan was pulled from consideration the previous day by Mayor Keith James, who announced he was pausing the plan as he works with neighborhood leaders to give them a greater say in the process.

The turnout at the meeting was organized by Save West Palm Beach, a recently formed nonprofit dedicated to preserving the city’s quality of life.
