Stats of games played through Thursday, Jan. 18

MIDSEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR CONTENDERS

Daniel Coldiron, Aubrey Rogers

Long one of the elite scorers in the area, Coldiron has carried that over into his first season with the Patriots. He is averaging 23.1 points and 7.8 rebounds on an Aubrey Rogers team facing one of the tougher schedules in the area.

Elijah Felix, Cape Coral

Felix has played a significant role in the Seahawks’ success this season with the team off to a 16-3 start. Felix is averaging 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for Cape Coral.

Daniel Rees, St. John Neumann

Playing against one of the area’s hardest schedules hasn’t stopped Rees from being the area’s top scorer. The senior guard is averaging 26.5 points, 8 rebounds and 3.5 assists for a 13-6 Neumann squad.

Julia Rodriguez, Gulf Coast

The Sharks are one of the top teams in the area, and Rodriguez’s consistency is a big reason why. The senior is averaging 12 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals a game.

Timothy Thurman, Lehigh

The junior center is leading a hot Lightning team in points (253), rebounds (171) and blocks (66). He has recorded nine double-doubles so far this season.

MIDSEASON UNDERCLASSMEN OF THE YEAR

Carlos Barbara, Oasis

The sophomore has been critical to the success of the Sharks as a two-way point guard. Leading Oasis in minutes, he is averaging 8.8 points, 4.7 assists and 1.9 steals for the team.

Corban Copeland, Donahue Catholic

The freshman has complemented the Shamrocks’ leading scorer Isaac Loboda with some sharp shooting from the perimeter. Copeland has hit 60 3-pointers on 42 percent shooting and has overall shooting splits of 44-42-87.

Dee Fletcher, Bishop Verot

The freshman is the Vikings leading scorer with 11.9 points a game. He is also averaging 7.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks and has posted three double-doubles.

Eugene McCray, Palmetto Ridge

The sophomore is one of the top scorers on a 15-2 Bears team. McCray is averaging 13.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists and posted an 18-9-8 game in a win against Bonita Springs.

Jamere Osceola, Everglades City

The guard is averaging 16.9 points and 5.3 boards a game with particular prowess beyond the arc with 36 made 3-pointers. He is shooting 50-40-89 splits for the Gators as a sophomore.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA BOYS BASKETBALL STORYLINES

First-year head coaches finding success

Several new coaches are leading their squads to big results. At Cape Coral, junior varsity coach Charley Cipriani replaced Bobby Ebert and has the Seahawks out to a 16-3 start. St. John Neumann is contending against one of the area’s toughest schedules and having success under first-year head coach Alex Golonka. New ECS coach RJ Jones has the Sentinels coming off their biggest wins against Bishop Verot and Gateway Charter, his former home. And the Griffins’ head coach, Mike Bonilla, has led his team to wins against First Baptist, Wiregrass Ranch and Sarasota Riverview.

Strong year for the publics

Several public school programs have established themselves as the area’s best after several seasons of private or charter schools occupying the top spots. In Collier County, Gulf Coast, Palmetto Ridge and Lely have a combined record of 42-10, and Aubrey Rogers is a program on the rise. Over in Lee County, a 17-1 Lehigh team is the only Southwest Florida team ranked in the top 100 by the FHSAA. Cape Coral is putting together another strong season, and Dunbar, led by former NBA player Shandon Anderson, has already topped last year’s win total with a 12-5 record.

Elite scoring talent on display

Southwest Florida lost one of the area’s top scorers in Barron Collier’s Sam Powell to injury, but there remain several local players who are averaging more than 20 points a night. Neumann’s Daniel Rees leads the way, while Ida Baker’s Brendan Slack is posting 24.2 points a night — good for top 25 in the state. Aubrey Rogers’ Daniel Coldiron is dropping 23.1 points a night, and North Fort Myers’ Robert Ballesteros is also topping 20 a contest. The area is definitely not lacking in bucket getters this season.

SWFL UPDATED BOYS BASKETBALL RANKINGS

1. Lehigh (17-1)

Preseason ranking: 7

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 1, 69

Analysis: The Lightning graduated a productive senior class last year, but this new group of players is flourishing for head coach BJ Edwards. Starters Timothy Thurman, Malachii Russ, Deo Downs and Allan Rivera are all averaging double digits in scoring. All of them juniors, they each have the ability to take over and produce for an offense averaging 73.5 points a contest.

2. Gulf Coast (13-5)

Preseason ranking: 4

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 5, 146

Analysis: The experience is paying off for Andrew Grillo’s squad as the Sharks have been on the winning side of several close games this season. Four seniors — Julian Rodriguez, Jacobi Sayus, Reed Franklin-Riashi and Collin Chrzanowski — have helped lead the team to victories against the likes of Barron Collier, Palmetto Ridge, Aubrey Rogers, Naples and Dunbar to start the season.

3. First Baptist (14-3)

Preseason ranking: 9

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 4, 126

Analysis: Coming off a Final Four season, the Lions remain one of the area’s most formidable teams, notching a win against St. John Neumann and going on the road to hand Oasis their second loss of the season. Defense has been a big part of recipe for FBA as they have held teams like Lehigh and Oasis to season lows in scoring. Junior Mikah Taylor is leading the team with 15.3 points and 4 assists a game, while junior Zander Stohl has been key on the glass.

4. Palmetto Ridge (15-2)

Preseason ranking: 2

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 3, 123

Analysis: The Bears have handled their business in the 2025-26 season, taking care of all in-state comers outside of a 6-point loss to Gulf Coast. The balance of John Solak’s group is what has led to the team’s consistent success. Senior Ethan Bates and junior Judah Lopez are strong on the boards, while sophomore Eugene McCray and senior Evan Adams can distribute or get their own. Bates’ perimeter shooting has been special — he has sunk at least three 3-pointers in eight games this season.

5. Oasis (17-2)

Preseason ranking: 6

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 2, 113

Analysis: The Sharks have a mix of veteran and young talent, and the chemistry is showing up on the court. The team has suffered just two losses — to CSN and First Baptist. Cory Bexfield’s group has the luxury of a deep bench and multiple players who can step up on any given night. Sophomore point guard Carlos Barbara has taken a leap for Oasis this season, while junior forward/center Johnny Cernuska has been essential for his versatility on defense. The Sharks bomb away from 3-point land and have five players who have made at least 15.

6. St. John Neumann (13-6)

Preseason ranking: NR

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 7, 166

Analysis: The Celtics are off to their best start in more than a decade and they are doing it up against one of the toughest schedules in the area. Their only local losses have come in close games against First Baptist and Lehigh. Senior Daniel Rees, the area’s leading scorer, is giving the team unreal production, but the team is also getting key contributions from Rony Raposo, Durant Rees and Ryan Chambers.

7. Cape Coral (16-3)

Preseason ranking: 1

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 6, 149

Analysis: The Seahawks have been steady all year, taking just one local loss to Dunbar which they avenged with a 86-55 victory in the LCAC tournament. Cape has four players — Elijah Felix, Jordan Rucker, Jiovanni Legros and Hezekiah Jones — averaging more than 12 points a game. Other teams have played tougher schedules than the Seahawks, which makes Friday’s LCAC final against Lehigh a significant opportunity.

8. Donahue Catholic (16-5)

Preseason ranking: NR

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 10, 238

Analysis: The Shamrocks are a team that can shoot opponents out of the gym. While the FHSAA doesn’t rank their schedule too highly, the team has posted victories against Bishop Verot and CSN and suffered a 6-point loss to St. John Neumann and a 3-point loss to Oasis. The scoring of senior Isaac Loboda and freshman Corban Copeland give this team a major lift — the pair has combined for more than 100 made 3-pointers.

9. Dunbar (12-5)

Preseason ranking: NR

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 9, 186

Analysis: Led by veteran roster, the Tigers are enjoying their best season in several years. The team went on a seven-game winning streak, which included a win over Cape Coral, but the Seahawks got revenge in the LCAC tournament. Senior Jamari Cobb is a reliable scorer and rebounder while Kristain Joseph and Eddie Gore have also been key contributors.

10. Aubrey Rogers (10-10)

Preseason ranking: NR

FHSAA ranking (area, statewide): 14, 325

Analysis: Look out for a Patriots team that is finding its groove. Aubrey Rogers started the season 1-4 but has just one loss in 2026 — a 2-point loss to Gulf Coast. The Patriots have notched wins against CSN, Barron Collier and Lely. The team’s backcourt of Daniel Coldiron and Seth Timmer combine to average 38.7 points a game. The team has played in a lot of high scoring games this season.

Next Five: Barron Collier, Community School, Everglades City, Gateway Charter, Lely
