Three things Florida football must do to defeat Mississippi State in Week 8

It’s starting to feel like the end of the road for Billy Napier in Gainesville. Whether Florida football beats Mississippi State on Saturday or not, the writing’s on the wall—fan confidence has completely evaporated, and most, if not all, believe a coaching change is inevitable.

But how the Florida Gators play on Saturday still matters. It’s Homecoming at the Swamp and it’s a chance to show some fight, build momentum for the rest of the season and avoid an embarrassing collapse in Week 8.

Beyond just the win-loss column, this game is about pride. It’s about proving there’s still heart and leadership in the locker room, even as the noise outside grows louder by the day. Florida needs to respond with urgency, energy and execution.

Here’s what the Orange and Blue must do to make sure that they win against Mississippi State.

Set the tone early and don’t let up

Scoring early hasn’t been Florida’s problem as of late, opening their last couple of games with touchdown drives that show flashes of what this offense can be. The issue is what happens after that. Too often, momentum stalls, execution fades and by the fourth quarter, the team looks lifeless.

Against Mississippi State, the Gators have to flip that script. It’s not about starting fast anymore. It’s about closing strong. Sustaining drives late, maintaining energy on defense and responding if the game gets tight will determine whether Florida can finish the job or collapse under the same old mistakes.

Take the pressure off DJ Lagway

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway’s sophomore season hasn’t lived up to the sky-high expectations, but the Gators can help him by leaning on the run game and simplifying the offense. Running back Jadan Baugh has been one of the few consistent bright spots on offense, and establishing him early will open things up downfield and keep the Bulldogs’ defense honest.

Florida doesn’t need Lagway to be perfect. They just need him to be efficient and play smart football. Short, high-percentage throws can get him comfortable and limit the turnovers that have plagued this team all season long.

Play with urgency on defense

The Gators can’t let Mississippi State dictate tempo on offense. That starts with winning on early downs to put the Bulldogs behind the chains and keep their offensive flow off balance. They average 33.7 points per game, over 395 yards of offense and a strong 184 rushing yards per contest. They’re also converting over 42% on third down, which means if Florida’s defense lets them stay on schedule, they’ll control the game and the clock.

Florida needs to put quarterback Blake Shapen in uncomfortable situations. He’s been effective when protected, averaging 8.1 yards per pass attempt, so getting pressure on him is essential.

This is a winnable matchup, but only if the Gators take control instead of playing catch-up.
