The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season is here.
Hurricane Erin formed Aug. 15 shortly before 11 a.m. It was about 460 miles east of northern Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at about 18 mph. Its winds were 75 mph, just barely above the threshold to become a hurricane.
“At this time we don’t expect a direct hit to the United States. We still need to watch it just in case,” said AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva. “We expect the entirety of the East Coast to be impacted by big waves, rip currents next week.”
How will Hurricane Erin affect Brevard County?
Space Coast residents will likely only see affects from Erin from a marine standpoint.
Boaters are warned to be cautious beginning early next week.
“While Tropical Cyclone Erin is currently forecast to turn north this weekend and pass well east of the local Atlantic waters next week, large swell is expected to reach the local waters Monday and quickly cause boating conditions to deteriorate, becoming hazardous through much of the week,” according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. “Winds increase a bit as the pressure gradient tightens between Erin and high pressure to the north, but seas are expected to be the primary hazard.”
What will the weather be in Brevard this weekend?
Hot.
The heat index could be as high as 106 Saturday. Chances of rain range between 30 to 50%.
Hurricane Erin previously impacted Brevard 30 years ago
In 1995, a different Hurricane Erin made landfall near Vero Beach and brought significant wind and rain to the Space Coast.
Evacuations were ordered for the barrier islands and the storm produced tornadoes and flooding rain across much of the county. At the time some residents took to boats to navigate flooded roadways.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency-financed a project to improve stormwater strategy and prevent major flooding like that again.
