Should Dolphins take a chance on top QB who may be available soon?

The Miami Dolphins signed Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million contract this offseason to replace Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback, but with limited opportunities, Willis’ success in South Florida is far from a sure thing.

That’s why Miami should still be looking for ways to take swings at the position in the near future, whether that be through the draft, in free agency or in a trade.

This year, the Dolphins could have a unique way to acquire a quarterback, as Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby is expected to be in the 2026 supplemental NFL draft after a gambling investigation led to his ineligibility to play college football this upcoming season.

And with the NCAA denying Texas Tech’s appeal to have Sorsby’s eligibility reinstated, it seems likely that he’ll be available for an NFL team to select him as a supplemental pick.

The 22-year-old spent two years at Indiana and two more at Cincinnati, completing  61.4% of his passes for 7,208 yards, 60 touchdowns and 18 interceptions and rushing for an additional 1,305 yards and 22 scores between the two schools.

2026 will be Willis’ first chance to begin a season as a team’s starter in the NFL. He’s had mixed results in his previous two stops with the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers, so the Dolphins should consider using a pick on Sorsby.

His off-field decision-making hasn’t been the best, that’s clear. However, he was expected to be a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL draft anyway, so if Miami could get him for a Day-2 or Day-3 pick in this supplemental draft, it would be worth the swing.
