Palm Beach groups award scholarships to children of town employees

Five college-bound students whose parents work for the Town of Palm Beach were recognized as recipients of scholarships sponsored by three organizations with longstanding ties to the town.

During a presentation at Town Hall on June 9, Mayor Danielle Moore announced the recipients of scholarships awarded by the Thomas Mettler Family Scholarship Fund, the Palm Beach Civic Association and the Citizens’ Association of Palm Beach.

The Thomas Mettler Family Scholarship Fund, established in 2019 in memory of the late former Town Council member and President Thomas Mettler, awarded scholarships of an undisclosed amount to:

In announcing the awards, Moore said the scholarship honors Mettler’s years of service to the town and his belief in expanding educational opportunities for the children of town employees.

“He believed in passing opportunities like scholarships forward to amplify qualified students of our town employees, the true pulse of Palm Beach, whose dedication quietly and vigorously sustains our community,” Moore said.

The Citizens’ Association’s Donald Singer Memorial Scholarship, which honors the late community leader and educator, was awarded to Liam Rothrock, who plans to study biology at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia. Rothrock is the son of Palm Beach Police Department Captain William Rothrock. The scholarship is valued at $3,500.

“Liam received this scholarship in recognition of his academic accomplishments and his dedication to studying biology to pursue a career in conservation and environmental sustainability,” Citizens’ Association co-chairs Rick Salvadore and Skip Aldridge said in a statement. “His involvement in community service and hands-on environmental programs reflects a strong commitment to making a positive impact on the natural world.”

The Palm Beach Civic Association Scholarship was awarded to Grady Messner, who plans to study emergency medicine and play baseball at Eastern Florida State College. He is the son of Lt. Paramedic Michael Messner. The scholarship is worth $1,750.

Messner was selected from a field of 19 “outstanding” applicants, Civic Association CEO Mary Robosson said.

“This annual scholarship program is one of many ways in which the Palm Beach Civic Association gives back to our local community while recognizing the talent and dedication of members of our next generation,” she said.
