How Aaron Philo could impact Florida football's playoff hopes

In the modern era of college football, transfer portal additions can often determine whether a team competes in its conference or makes a serious run at the College Football Playoff. Instant impact transfers have become increasingly valuable, filling roster gaps, elevating position groups, and, in some cases, changing the trajectory of an entire season.

CBS Sports wrote one transfer for each team in its latest top-25 rankings whose success could have a significant impact on their team’s future in 2026. For Florida, that distinction went to quarterback Aaron Philo, the transfer from Georgia Tech.

The Gators have built one of college football’s best offensive infrastructures for a quarterback. They have a top-five talent at running back in Jadan Baugh, a phenomenal receiving core with Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown and Eric Singleton, and a talented offensive line. The only major uncertainty is at the quarterback position.

Philo is competing with Tramell Jones for the starting job, but with the addition of his former offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, Philo was already familiar with the playbook. Sources have also indicated that he’s ahead in the competition after spring practice.

Philo, a redshirt sophomore, played well in limited time at Georgia Tech the past two seasons. In the past two seasons, Philo has had three games with 20 or more passing attempts; in those games, he averaged 274 pass yards, on a 58% completion percentage, with two total touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Florida believes it landed a valuable addition in Philo through the transfer portal. If he develops into a reliable option under center, the Gators could strengthen their case for a College Football Playoff berth.
