From FSU star to World Cup stage: Jameis Winston excels in Fox Sports role

Heisman Trophy winner. National champion at Florida State. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An 11-year NFL veteran with five different teams.

Jameis Winston’s career has always been defined by milestones.

But it’s the other qualities — the infectious energy, the unapologetic authenticity, the off-the-cuff humor — that have made his latest act feel like a natural extension. Even while still an active NFL quarterback, Winston has slid comfortably into the media world.

Now, he’s taking that personality to a global stage, entertaining audiences as a Fox Sports digital correspondent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“If there’s one thing about me it’s I’m gonna get you right #usa #fifaworldcup #soccer #WorldCup #JameisOnFox,” Winston posted recently on social media — a message that, like much of his career, lands somewhere between confidence, charisma and pure Jameis.

Why is Jameis Winston so popular on the microphone?

Tallahassee resident David Ross, a two-time World Series winner and former Chicago Cubs manager, has also discovered a new career behind the microphone.

Ross rejoined ESPN in March 2026 on a multi-year deal following his managerial tenure with the Cubs. He serves as a baseball analyst for both game and studio coverage. He originally served as an ESPN analyst from 2017 to 2019 before leaving to manage the Cubs.

“I think authenticity is the key,” Ross told the Tallahassee Democrat when asked about Winston’s popularity. “I think he is organically himself, which is a fun, knowledgeable guy. His infectious personality comes through very easily.”

FSU fans wholeheartedly agreed as the Tallahassee Democrat posed a question on Facebook about Winston’s broadcasting success.

“Authenticity!” said Laci Swann, wife of former FSU basketball star Isaiah Swann.

“You can tell he genuinely enjoys sports. Gonna make a fortune when he retires and goes into media,” said Lawrence Steed.

“Jameis is who he is. Camera and mic or not. He can do anything with that personality, ability to relate to people, and his work ethic. He walked me to my car the night I met him after a late game at Howser, and was amazed by my hand controls. He and his family have been wonderful to me ever since,” said Mason Hall Morris, a longtime FSU baseball fan who has been in a wheelchair since childhood by spina bifida.

“Vibrant personality, well spoken, upbeat, high energy,” Frank Johnson said.

“He is hilarious,” Dale Brown said.

Where is Jameis Winston next at the World Cup?

Winston is a recurring guest on the FOX Sports YouTube Channel “Always On” livestream, which broadcasts continuously for 39 straight days through July 19. He makes sporadic, viral field reports during the FIFA World Cup Live pregame and postgame blocks on FOX and FS1.

FoxSports explained in a story that “if there’s one thing Winston has accomplished throughout this World Cup, it’s proving that he truly is a man of the people.”

Earlier in the World Cup, Winston was spotted helping Japanese fans clean up the Dallas Stadium stands (a tradition that was spotlighted after the team’s first World Cup in 1998) following Japan’s thrilling 2-2 draw with the Netherlands.

The FOX Sports broadcast team, featuring Rob Stone, couldn’t contain their excitement for Winston as the feed shifted over to him in the crowd, according to the story.

“Jameis Winston is working with the Japanese national team to clean up Dallas Stadium,” Stone said. “He’s a man of the people. Show me a number one draft pick in NFL history who takes out his own garbage bag and cleans up inside the stadium.”
