Palm Beach County under heat advisory as feels-like temps hit low 100s

The heat won’t let up anytime soon in Palm Beach County.

It will be especially hot this week as Saharan dust blows over the area. The dust cuts down the chances for rain, so the air will stay warm for longer.

The high temperatures will be in the lower 90s along the coast and in the mid-to-upper 90s over inland Palm Beach County through the weekend.

The heat index — or the “feels-like” temperature — is expected to be at least 105 degrees each day, according to Chris Fisher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami. The feels-like temperature has topped 100 degrees nearly every day over the past few weeks.

There are fairly low rain chances until Friday, July 10. But on that day and on Saturday, July 11, the chances for rain climb up to 30% to 40%, which is still lower than usual for this time of year.

Why is it such a hot summer in Palm Beach County?

It’s a hotter-than-normal summer.

“A lot of it has just been the lack of rainfall overall,” Fisher said. “If you don’t get those daily showers and thunderstorms cooling things down, you tend to run a little warmer than normal.”

This is the second summer in a row that Palm Beach County has been in a drought in July. And the area is under a heat advisory until 6 p.m on Wednesday, July 8.

During a heat advisory, the NWS recommends that people limit strenuous activities outdoors during the peak heat of the day, stay hydrated, take care of pets and stay in air conditioning when they can. A heat advisory is triggered when there is a heat index of at least 108 degrees for two consecutive hours.

“The heat is certainly going to be an issue for the weekend,” Fisher said.
