One man taken to hospital after small plane crash near Cascade Lake

2 p.m.: Passenger plane may have been diverted after crash

It was not clear whether the plane was landing or taking off, and the Tallahassee airport director and a city spokeswoman were not immediately available.

But it appears that passengers on at least one plane were diverted to another airport.

“Crash at TLH,” one person wrote on twitter. “My son’s okay as he diverted to another airport but please pray for those involved.” The airport’s arrival board showed that a plane en route from Atlanta was delayed and expected to arrive at 2:40 p.m.

1:45 p.m.: ‘Thank God… It could have been a lot worse’

The Tallahassee Fire Department said a single passenger, private aircraft crash-landed near Cascade Lake, north of the Tallahassee International Airport.

Paramedics treated the passenger and transported him to the hospital, while the fire department’s hazmat crew started to contain fuel after spotting a leak.

“A search of the aircraft was completed to confirm no additional occupants were inside,” TFD said in social media post. “The cause of the incident remains under investigation.”

“Thank God they’re okay,” one person wrote on Facebook. “Could have been a lot worse!!! Glad it wasn’t.”

1:30 p.m.: ‘Alert and standing up’: Crash happened in exposed cypress forest

Tallahassee Fire Department spokesperson Todd Inserra said the department will be releasing more information about the crash and photos soon.

While he did not know how damaged the plane was or the type of aircraft, he told the Democrat only one person was on board the plane.

“They were alert and standing up when we got there,” he said. “They’ve been transported to the hospital now.”

He said the crash occurred near Cascade Lake off site of the airport property. The lake has been in the headlines recently, because the drought exposed the lake bed and an other worldly landscape of exposed cypress roots.

Inserra said the TFD HAZMAT team was summoned to the scene to try to stop a fuel leak afterward.

ORIGINAL STORY

Emergency responders are on the scene of what the Tallahassee Police Department says is a small plane crash in a wooded area near the airport.

TPD spokesperson Alicia Hill said at about 11:50 a.m. on July 8, police were called to the 3000 block of Capital Circle Southwest after the apparent crash.

TPD, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and the Tallahassee Fire Department responded to the scene.

It was not clear how many people were on board. Hill said one adult was being transported to a local hospital but she didn’t “know the extent of injuries” at this time.

Few other details were available at 1:30 p.m.

The crash appears to have happened in a wooded area near Million Air Tallahassee, which serves as a private aviation terminal for jet passengers and flight crews.

“It’s too early to tell what happened or where it was headed or anything at this point,” she told the Democrat.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
