A DeLand man is in Volusia County jail on no bond after someone complained to police that he violated a protection order and was seen abusing his dog, according to a press release from the DeLand Police Department.
Christopher Whitley, 45, was arrested on a charge of violating a protection order and a charge of animal cruelty.
On July 25, at around 6:49 p.m., DeLand Police officers responded to a civil complaint on South Hill Avenue.
They reviewed surveillance footage related to the protection order complaint, which led to his arrest. Officers also found video from around 1 p.m. the same day that showed Whitley “grabbing his dog by the collar, swinging the dog in the air, and throwing it to the ground,” the release stated.
The dog didn’t show any visible injuries, according to the release, and “was taken to the DeLand Police Department’s kennels after no one on scene could take custody of the dog.”
