Squirrel steals show at Tigers-Orioles' game: 'I have freedom on my mind'

Detroit Tigers’ fans didn’t have too much to cheer about in Monday’s 8-5 loss against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park.

The Tigers were trailing 3-0 in the second inning in the opener and never recovered in Detroit’s third straight loss.

In the bottom of the seventh inning though, the fans let out a big cheer as an elusive squirrel popped onto the field and escaped the clutches of the grounds crew.

Finally, the squirrel was covered in a towel and taken off the field, much to the chagrin of the disappointed fans.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Tigers’ mascot, Paws, put up a sign, “Free the Squirrel.”

Tigers announcer Jason Benetti had fun describing the outfield antics.

“The squirrel is free once again,” he said. “Hemmed in. No. I won’t be hemmed in. I have freedom on my mind!”
