The Miami Dolphins put forth a concerted effort this offseason to move on from several veterans from their 2025 roster with their new general manager and head coach taking over.
However, there were a few of their own free agents that Miami decided to bring back for 2026, including linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who appeared in 17 games and recorded 20 tackles and two passes defensed last year.
While the team has only been on the field for a few days this offseason, Dolphins linebackers coach Al Washington, who joined the staff this year, has already found an incredible description for Gay’s play style.
“Willie Gay is violence, embodied violence,” Washington said. “I love him. I could watch Willie on a sled for hours. Like, no matter what he does, he approaches it with enthusiasm, man. He’ll wear a hat when he hits the sled. It’s just a matter of time before the hat flies off. And he loves football, so yeah, Willie’s got that. And there’s others as well, but yeah, Willie definitely could be in that category.”
Heading into 2026, Gay is fighting for a job, after the team returned Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and Jackson Woodard while also signing Ronnie Harrison Jr. and drafting Jacob Rodriguez and Kyle Louis.
If he does make this team, Gay will serve as depth and could play a role on special teams, but for now, he’s already impressing those he needs to.
