Florida Power & Light held a news conference Thursday, May 14, 2026, as part of its annual storm drill in West Palm Beach, outlining the company’s emergency response plans ahead of the June 1 hurricane season start.
FPL CEO Armando Pimentel and Vice President of Power Delivery, Michael Jarro, briefed reporters on new technologies the utility says will improve power restoration for millions of Florida customers following a major storm. The drill, held at FPL’s facility at 4255 Up-the-Grove Lane, simulated a Category 2 hurricane impacting most of the company’s service area. Officials highlighted grid upgrades, including underground power lines, concrete utility poles, smart grid devices, and AI-enhanced damage assessment tools.
FPL, Florida’s largest electric utility, conducts the annual drill each year before hurricane season to ensure employees are prepared to respond when a real storm strikes.
