Mystery yacht off North Captiva Island has people talking

Maybe Jeff Bezos owns it, or possibly Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates or Shahid “Shad” Khan, the wealthiest person in Southwest Florida.

A mystery yacht off North Captiva Island has people talking, especially on Facebook, where people have weighed in on who owns the large luxury yacht.

What are people saying

Jennie Battel of New Jersey posted a photo of the yacht the afternoon of Dec. 29 on the Sanibel & Captiva Island public Facebook group with more than 187,000 followers.

“Anybody know about this yacht off the coast of North Captiva?” Battel wrote.

Some speculated that the mega yacht belonged to Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars football team, who’s retained his title as the richest person in Naples ― and Southwest Florida.

His net worth has grown to $13.4 billion, up from $12.2 billion in 2024, Forbes reported in 2025.

Khan often docks his yacht, Kismet, on the St. Johns River near EverBank Stadium, where his playoff-bound Jaguars play in the Bold City.

Others speculated that the big boat belonged to Roger Penske, a longtime successful auto racing team owner and businessman.

The posting early Dec. 30 has more than 1,100 reactions, more than 1,300 comments and 60-plus shares.

‘Santa is on vacation’

The boat had a dark hull with white trim on the two decks shown in photos people posted.

Others said the boat belonged to a former Qatar prime minister, Tiger Woods, another celebrity and/or billionaire or former Vice President Mike Pence, who has often vacationed on nearby Sanibel Island.

A few said “Santa is on vacation” while most simply commented, “Who cares?” Or they claimed the boat was theirs while others clicked on the laugh emoji.

Is it Bill Gates’ yacht?

Google Lens, image recognition technology that allows you to capture the photo on your phone, said the yacht was called Breakthrough that Bill Gates commissioned to be built.

The nearly 400-foot-long Breakthrough “superyacht was delivered in 2025 by Dutch builder Feadship.”

“It is a bold statement of innovation, elegance and next-generation design,” Google Lens said.

A second Google Lens search said the superyacht was Luna, “an explorer yacht known for being one of the largest in the world.”

Luna measures about 375 feet, was built in Germany and was originally constructed for Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch and politician.

‘Probably one of the yachts sanctioned from Russia,” one comment said.
